The aisle is the Lowcountry's quietest gallery. Same as a congregation settles into a pew, a shelf settles into its rhythm: paprika stacked so the grain of the jar catches the fluorescents, canned tomatoes turned label-forward like a painting hung at eye height. I've spent four years learning that a store is not a warehouse with a door. It is a stage, and the stock is the ensemble.
Where the craft lives
People think retail is repetition, and it is, in the same way a gospel quartet is repetition. The baseline that holds the whole song down only works because somebody shows up and hits it steady. On the floor that's facing, zoning, the walk from the back stockroom with the boxes balanced up to your chin. It is body knowledge more than head knowledge, and it deserves the same respect we give a fiddle.
"The machine handles the loud, regular signals; the person reads the room." — a truth I found in an old feed and pinned above my register.
My digital life works the same way. I sketch in the margins of shift reports. I keep a subdomain where I turn my Lowcountry eye outward — films on the poetry of the price check, a tribute to the overnight stockers who are the true opening act of every retail day.
