The Unsung Heroes of the Aisle

a tribute by Alvester Deloach

Every shelf you see in the daylight was stood up in the dark. The overnight stocker walks a sleeping store with a box cutter and a scanner, restocking what the day before sold through, while the town sleeps. They are the opening act nobody bought a ticket to see.

Empty grocery store aisle at closing
The quiet before the doors open. This is where the craft has already happened.

The roll call

The overnight stocker

Boxes balanced to the chin, pallet jack humming, the floor their whole world between 11pm and 6am.

The price-checker

The one with the scanner gun who finds the one item in the whole store that doesn't want to be found.

The zone-cleaner

Straightening cans into a line so true it could be surveyed. The margin note of the retail world.

The cart-runner

Braving the parking lot in the rain, counting corrals at a trot. Nobody claps, everybody depends.

Why it matters

Because a store runs on hands more than it runs on systems. The register is easy; the aisle behind it is the art. This page is my small thank-you to the people who make the shelves read like a sentence before any of us ever looks at them.
